January is National Blood Donor Month
- Carriage Hill Health & Rehab Center
Here’s a fact for you. Every two seconds someone in the United States needs blood. This is why for nearly 50 years, January has been known as National Blood Donor Month.
When it comes to blood and platelet donations, the winter season is often filled with hurdles as blood drives compete with things such as seasonal illnesses and inclement weather. Due to these factors, the American Red Cross has experienced the worst blood shortage in over a decade. During this critical time of year, the Red Cross depends on donors to continue to supply these resources in order to make sure that blood products are available at about 2,500 hospitals nationwide. Blood donations, including platelets and plasma, save lives and improve the health of millions of people worldwide!
Some Facts:
- The American Red Cross needs 13,000 blood donations every single day to maintain an appropriate blood supply.
- The American Journal of Epidemiology reports that blood donors are 88 percent less likely to have a heart attack.
- People who begin donating blood at age 17 and donate every eight weeks will have donated 48 gallons of blood by age 76.
